Description
The Pumped-Storage Optimisation service provides intelligent operational scheduling for the Sfikia-Asomata coupled hydropower system, optimising bidirectional Sfikia pumped-storage operations to maximise system-wide economic value under varying electricity market prices and water availability conditions. The service operates in two modes: day-ahead scheduling (24h daily) and real-time adjustment via rolling 48h Model Predictive Control updated every 6 hours.

Business Need
Coordinating pumped-storage operations with downstream production scheduling is critical to realising the full economic value of the Sfikia-Asomata configuration. Independent optimisation of each plant misses the hydraulic coupling — water released by Sfikia increases Asomata production, while Sfikia pumping reduces it. The service jointly optimises this coupled system while respecting irrigation water release obligations during the peak agricultural period.
Key Performance Indicators
Revenue improvement over baseline historical operation and naive scheduling policies
Constraint satisfaction rate across all timesteps
Round-trip efficiency of pumped-storage cycles
Arbitrage efficiency: ratio of achieved net profit to theoretical maximum under perfect hindsight
Optimisation solution generation within 5 minutes for market submission compliance
Data Provided
Hourly optimal power schedules for Sfikia generation, Sfikia pumping, and Asomata generation
Reservoir level trajectories, net revenue per hour, and expected total revenue over horizon
Mode 1 (day-ahead) and Mode 2 (rolling 48h MPC) outputs
Inputs: day-ahead market prices, inflow forecasts (Service 6), real-time reservoir levels, irrigation schedules
